Come one, come all and celebrate the 2nd annual Chinese New Year Celebration
in the Courtyard concert with Silk Road and Friends.
Learn about the twelve ZODIAC animals through the great storytelling skills
of Professor Jan Walls.
Witness the preamble to the Zodiac dance with the Lorita Leung dancers, Jacky Essombe, The Stilt Moon Dancers and other friends.
Be mesmerized by Uzume Taiko and the great Pepe Danza’s wild drumming, along with the fabulous Beijing songbird “Feng Jun Wang” and opera sensation “Willy Miles” singing famous Chinese Folk Songs.
A family event of free concerts and arts and crafts as part of the Chinese New Year celebration, before and after the Chinese New Year parade. The event creates a joyful street fair atmosphere with the stage performances focusing on traditional and contemporary Asian music, songs and folk dancing. Under a big tent in the courtyard adjacent to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.
The event is co-sponsored by the 2009 Cultural Olympiad, the City of Vancouver and Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and under the artistic direction of Silk Road Music and Friends. Come celebrate Chinese New Year with a world vision.

Silk Road Music
Based in Vancouver, Silk Road Music is a professional ensemble that has been
touring and recording since 1991. From festivals to symphony halls, the group
has garnered fantastic reviews from audiences and media for its virtuosic
skills and artistry. It has twice won the Best World Music Album at
the West Coast Music Awards and was nominated for JUNO and Canadian
Folk Music Awards for its universal vision, “Best Ensemble” and “Pushing
the Boundaries”.
On Feb 1,2009, Silk Road Music and Dr. Sun Yat
Sen Chinese Garden will again present a multi-cultural,multi-faceted performance.
The project will showcase Vancouver Chinese artists and multicultural guests
from our community with two magical live performances on the most important
of Chinese holidays — Chinese New Year and the New Year’s
parade. This will be a powerful example of the ongoing mandate that
Silk Road Music has undertaken to bring Chinese music to the world,
combining traditional techniques with Western harmony and the ensemble’s
openness to music of all cultures.

Qiu
Xia He (Pipa/Chinese lute)
Once taught at the Xian Academy of Music in China. Since moving to Canada,
she has created many exciting musical projects with her artistry and muticultural
vision. Qiu xia is the driving force behind Silk Road Music.

Andre Thibault (Guitar, Oud and Winds)
A key performer with Silk Road Music. His fiery rhythms and stunning technique
result from a unique blend of Andalucian traditions colored with Jazz,
Classical and World Music. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist.

Pepe Danza (Shakuhachi and World Percussion)
He has toured and studied all over the World. Very much in demand due to
his charismatic personality and masterful skills on multi-instruments.

Jacky Essombe and the Makalas African Dancers
Originally from Cameroon West Africa. She has toured Canada, the United States
and Europe with major dance companies. She embodies the joyful Spirit of
Africa.

Feng Jun Wang (Singer)
Graduating from Bei Jing Chinese Opera Academy. Her excellent theatrical
background and vocal training brings the music to the stage with all the
essential aspects and dynamics of Chinese traditions.
Willy Miles (Singer)
He has performed with the Vancouver Opera and across N. America. With his
strong opera training, Willy has developed his own interpretations that
creatively introduce classical, folk, jazz and many other singing styles.
Jun Rong (Erhu)
Jun Rong graduated from the China Music Academy. Her extraordinary command
of the erhu (Chinese violin) and her passionate artistic expression have
overwhelmed her audiences.
Bonnie Soon and Uzume Taiko
Bonnie Soon has served as artistic director of Uzume Taiko since 1999. The
group has toured nationally and internationally. Innovators in creative
Taiko collaborations with varying styles including Celtic, jazz and classical.

Jian Ming Pan (Dizi)
Chinese virtuoso on the Dizi, a Chinese bamboo flute. His artistic conception
emphasizes the importance of timbre and the aesthetic quality of music. Very
much in demand as a wonderful traditional player.
Jessica Jone and Chengxin Wei (Chinese dance)
Trained professionally in Chinese classical and folk dance at the Beijing
Dance Academy. This husband and wife team have won many awards for performance
and choreography, including the North American Chinese Dance Competition.

Lorita Leung Chinese Dance Company
This company has been performing Chinese Folk, Classical and Minority
dances, as well as Chinese Ballet and Contemporary Chinese Dance since 1970.
The dancers are trained at The Lorita Leung Dance Academy in Vancouver,
British Columbia, Canada.

Carman Rosen and the Stilt Moon Dancers
Carman has been a key player in community events for the last few years.
She is a producer, artist, stilt dancer and the Director of the popular
Festival of Lanterns event held every year at the Renfrew Community Centre.

Prof. Jan Walls storyteller
Jan Walls is a Professor Emeritus and storyteller extraordinaire. He is one
of the few non-Chinese who has mastered the art of "KUAIBAN"(bamboo
clappertales) and has performed on China Television.
